Dorden Tashithang Buddhist University is situated in the northern region of Thimphu, approximately a thirty-minute drive from the city center. Nestled within a verdant forest characterized by the tranquil sounds of avian life, the university was established in 2015 to advance the pursuit of higher Buddhist studies in Bhutan. This initiative has received notable support from His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, as well as His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The establishment of the university was financed by the Government of India, reflecting a commitment to fostering educational development in the region.
The principal temple is distinguished by a prominent statue of Buddha Gautama, in addition to a statue of Guru Padma Sambhava. It also features statues of Manjushri, Maitreya Buddha, and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. These statues were generously sponsored by His Eminence Dorji Lopen Kinley in the year 2016. Furthermore, the temple is home to 1,000 Buddha statues, which were installed at an expenditure of 2 crore, funded by a devotee named Dendrup Namgyel. Additionally, the temple includes a spacious library that has recently undergone maintenance, primarily designed to serve the research needs of Buddhist scholars.
Currently, the institution is staffed by 18 faculty members and serves an enrollment of approximately 200 students. Since 2016, a total of 600 monks have graduated from the university and are actively engaged in disseminating the teachings of Buddha Dharma in various capacities.
