Dorden Tashithang Buddhist University

Located in the North of Thimphu, about half an hour drive from Thimphu city, in the middle of a green forest where we hear chirping birds, Dorden Tashithang Buddhist university was established in 2015. It was established to promote higher Buddhist studies in Bhutan by His Majesty the fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck and His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. It was funded by the Government of India.
The main temple houses a large Buddha Gautama statue, followed by Guru PadmaSambhava. There are also statues of Manjushri, Matriya Buddha, and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The statues were sponsored by His Eminence Dorji Lopen Kinley in 2016. The main temple also houses 1000 Buddha statues, installed at the cost of 2 crore by a devotee called Dendrup Namgyel. We have also a spacious library newly maintained, mainly aimed for Buddhist researcher students.
At present, there are 18 teaching staff and around 200 students. Between 2016 till now, 600 monks have passed out from the university and continue to spread Buddha Dharma in all capacities.
